Memories of College Street School Blake Kellas from Room 1 Blake, who started school last November, read out the following speech – he did so well !!
All the junior children wrote what they love about College Street School. We all said the Teachers are really kind. Being a Duffy School means we get lots of free books. We go on lots of trips. This year we went to Larnach’s Castle and someone saw a ghost but they used their strengths and looked at it. Lots of us had out first boat trip on the Monarch. When we went on the train we loved going through the tunnels with our lights off. It was so dark and we screamed. We got to go swimming at Moana Pool and we could stand under the water fountain. We wish it was a chocolate fountain like the one we saw when we went to Cadburys Factory. Market Day is our favourite day at school and we love our Gecko movies. We feel famous. Our sleepovers at School are fun. Except when it rained so much we got soaked in our tents. Having to sleep by the huge spider at the Museum kept us awake or that is what we told our teachers. Sometimes we get scared, like at Polyfest but when the people clapped and some kids did the haka for us we wanted to do our item again. Playing, “Its in the Bag” at Assembly is fun but we remember when we did the flashmob once and we had to keep it a secret. Keeping secrets are hard for us wee kids. We love Maths, reading and writing and sharpening pencils with the fancy pencil sharpener. But most of all we like making new friends. Thanks College Street School.
Samara Scholten from Room 5 Superb camps stand out as a highlight of our time at College Street. Waiora was absolutely amazing with activities like go – carting and archery being both enjoyable and challenging. We also love PrEP. We enjoy making goods to sell, earning money and spending it. We have enjoyed the opportunities to do art and Phys Ed. Mrs Anderson and the teachers organise lots of fun trips for us, especially swimming at Moana Pool and our trip this year to the Otago Peninsula. End of term celebration days are always fun, with movies and sometimes ice creams. We have loved our time at College Street and will always remember the many friends we have made. Thank you.
Ella Scott from Room 7 During our years at College Street School we have had the chance to do lots of enjoyable things. Many of our early memories are having the sleep over at school. Ella remembers having to go home as she just couldn’t get to sleep! Another vivid memory is having our sleepover at the museum. The animal attic at night was certainly spooky and it didn’t help that one of us went sleep walking during the night! The ski camp to the Remarkables was a trip of a lifetime with many laughs and lots of pain. Our Year 6 camp to Waianakarua was a highlight of this year and we all will have many fond memories of all the activities we did. Unfortunately for us the last day fell on April Fool’s day and the teachers really made fools of us with the fake mouse that was real!! The teachers have been enjoyable and will always be remembered for the rest of our lives. They have given us skills that we will be able to use in our future. Other activities like Stars on Stage, discos, sports teams, PrEP, Polyfest and productions have been lots of fun and have given us lots of laughs and experiences. We have really enjoyed making new and lifelong friends. We would like to thank all the College Street staff for making our days at College Street School fun and for being a really good place to learn. All the best to Mr Tenbeth as he leaves us to begin a new job in 2012. He is our favourite principal. We will always remember his lolly basket, It’s in the Bag, singing to us on our birthdays and his great sense of humour. We will cherish these memories. We will all miss College Street School however we are looking forward to new teachers and challenges next year.
Mr Tenbeth I will remember a community that had an intense pride in their school; a community that told others of that pride. A community that was always willing to support school initiatives. I will remember parents who have a keen love for their children. Some struggled with parenting, others were an inspiration to me – but I think I can honestly say that I have not met a parent who did not want the best for their child. I will remember members of Boards of Trustees who were always keenly focussed on what was good for the kids of the day. Personal egos and agendas have always been put to one side as members strategised the best way in which they could support the advancement of teaching and learning in our school. I will remember our support staff – people working in our school office coordinating our school activities and supporting our parents and visitors, teacher aides who so effectively supported learners within classrooms, caretakers who have maintained our school and kept it looking beautiful. I will remember the many teachers who have passed through College Street School. I will remember their level of dedication, effort and skill and their focus on doing their very best for the children of the day. I will remember the many teachers who have left College Street for positions of responsibility in other institutions. I will remember children, over ten or more years, who have taught me heaps and who have helped me and allowed me to become a better school principal. You taught me things like what it looks like to succeed what it looks like to fail what it looks like to have good friendships what it looks like to work effectively by yourself and with others what it looks like to have pride Finally I will remember that the success of this school has always been dependent upon a team of people. The recognition that we all need to have a common focus of achieving the best for children is paramount in our interactions, in our values and in our strategies. It is with a pride and pleasure that I say thank you for allowing me to lead your school since 1999. May I wish you all the very best for Christmas, for the holidays and especially for the new start in 2012.

College Street School
is a small urban primary school set in the Caversham area of Dunedin. At
present the roll stands at approximately 200. The pupils at the school
range from the age of five to eleven years ( Year 0 - Year 6). There are
twenty teachers and teacher aides. They are hardworking, dedicated, caring
and innovative. They work and co-operate together well as a team and all
are involved in the corporate life of the school.
HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
There has always been a school
on the College St School site but it was originally known as Caversham
School. The first public school was opened in 1861 and in 1899 the existing
hall was built. In 1927 a new brick school was built on South Road in the
Caversham area but the infant classes were still accommodated at the old
site. In 1937 a new Infant School of four classrooms was built on the now
College St site. In 1959 College St School became a school in its own right
and was declared separate from Caversham.

The school has a reputation
for being innovative. We have been the lead school in an ICT cluster group
called the Highland Cluster for the last three years and introduced a wide
variety of technologies into classes which are enhancing learning for our
children. We are a "Duffy" School, and we are proud of it!
Being a Duffy school is one of a number of ways that literacy is supported
throughout the school. PrEP, (Primary Enterprise programme), is a feature
of the school. We believe that this programme allows our students
to become effective, independent learners.
The school is proud of its
reputation for meeting the needs of children with special needs. We believe
that the support that such children receive from staff and pupils, has
a significant impact on the culture of our school.
